Elegant perfume for a special occasion, with an overpowering, richly musky scent that demands attention. A single spritz is all it takes; any more would be excessive. Unfortunately, I feel like I still need to mature to truly appreciate its nuances.
I'm experiencing the exact opposite of reviewer Leesee, as Ubar has me utterly enamored - it's the most stunning and opulent flower oriental I've ever had the pleasure of smelling. Unlike Gold and Dia, which didn't resonate with me despite being pleasant to sniff, Ubar strikes a chord with its unadulterated beauty. The ethereal Damask Roses on a bed of lily of the valleys, infused with a subtle animalic touch from civet, has won my heart over. I'm smitten with this floral masterpiece - and having only a decant isn't enough to deter me; December is just around the corner, after all!
I have to start by saying that Ubar is the most expensive fragrance I possess. After exhausting a couple of large decants, I knew I had to acquire it. The thing is, I barely detect the notes. It's so well blended and crafted that it simply smells amazing! I get a lemony sensation, which I'm guessing is due to the bergamot and lily of the valley, followed by rose. This is something I most definitely perceive! Big, bold, beefy, and jammy like no other rose I've ever smelled before, even though it's not listed. It takes my breath away. The skankiness I experience is probably due to the indoles in jasmine or maybe civet. It's not listed, but its animalic growl is unmistakable and I'm quite sure it's present in the base notes. Ubar evokes distant, exotic lands where kings and queens live in extravagant luxury. It smells rich, but not in the sense of financial wealth. It's the richness that comes from using the finest ingredients to create a masterpiece. It has a vintage quality, but in a good way. There's nothing sugary or fruity here, which is a blessing! Unfortunately, they don't make fragrances like this anymore. It could have been created in the 1920s and wouldn't feel out of place. I don't find it particularly unisex, although skin chemistry can be unpredictable. I think the rich floral and musky woody base would work beautifully on the right man, as long as he doesn't assign labels to perfume. I know I don't. Ubar is one of the richest floral fragrances I possess, yet at the same time it's not heavy. The sillage is massive but airy, like a fluffy cloud surrounding me without overwhelming. Real ladies don't shout! Longevity is perpetual on my skin. In short, I adore Ubar. It offers the deepest, most richly textured rose, an animalic growl on a bed of sweet sandalwood, and the best sillage around. What more could I ask for?! One of the finest fragrances from Amouage and one of the most exceptional I own. I highly recommend it to everyone!
It has an unmistakably earthy, animalic quality reminiscent of a rough-around-the-edges canine, yet despite its unrefined aspects, I find myself drawn to it. Over time, this raw, damp animalism mellowes into a captivating, velvety softness.
